3rd Grade Habitat Unit
Challenging Problem or Question:
What does an animal need to survive in its habitat?
Launch Activity:Teachers presented a fictitious letter from Zoo Atlanta asking for the students help in creating a new exhibit.
Then each student chose a plastic egg with a picture of an animal in it. They were very eager to open their egg ("Hatchimal") to determine what their animal was. Scenerio:
Zoo Atlanta has contacted AES to submit several new Hatchimals that can survive in the different habitats found within the state of Georgia. Your task is to create a new Hatchimal, that is a combination of 2 animals that currently exists within a Georgia region. All Hatchimals will be presented to the Board of Directors for consideration to be added to the new exhibit. |
Sustained Inquiry:
Students selected two animals from their assigned region, and researched the answers to their questions. For example: What is our habitat? How does it survive? What does it eat? As they learned about their two animals, they often developed more questions to research and answer.
Public Product:
Students created displays showing what they learned about their own "Hatchimals" habitats combining characteristics from both animals. In small groups students created a blueprint of possible display locations for "Hatchimals" at Zoo Atlanta.
